The history of Blacks is often inadequately reflected in the general history of Canada; therefore, there is a need for specific attention to paid on said history. February (Black History Month) is the month in which we bear witness to the progress, richness, and diversity of the achievements and contributions of Blacks in Canada and around the world. It is also a time to reflect on the issues and difficulties that were faced, and continue to be faced within the Black community.

During the 1920s an African American named Carter G. Woodson created and promoted Negro History Week in the USA. In 1976, the month-long celebration was implementedIn1995, the Government of Canada officially declared February Black History Month throughout the country.

Here in Winnipeg, the Annual Black History Month Celebration was launched by the local Chapter of the National Black Coalition of Canada in 1982. The honor and responsibility of organising these events have passed through different organisations throughout the years. This year the Jamaican Association of Manitoba, Inc. is sponsoring the events. The events are open to the public and we hope to see a varied body of participants, of all communities, in the hope that the linkages between all our histories become evident.
